Sierra Madre : Day-Laborer Ordinance

A proposed ordinance to prohibit any person from standing on the street or public property to solicit employment from the occupant of a motor vehicle will be the subject of a public hearing during the Oct. 27 City Council meeting.

The ordinance is intended to alleviate traffic congestion, pedestrian obstruction and harassment, litter and damaged vegetation caused by legal residents and the undocumented who gathering at some locations in the city to obtain work. Violation of the ordinance would be a misdemeanor. The day laborers and the people hiring them would be cited.

The Congregational Church of Sierra Madre is working with city officials to solve the problem and has offered its parking lot as a gathering place.
