U.S., Italian Doctors to Share Research Honors
Two doctors from the United States and Italy will share a $300,000 award for their development of a widely used treatment for breast cancer, the Dr. Josef Steiner Cancer Foundation said Friday.
The award was given to Drs. Bernard Fisher of the United States and Gianni Bonadonna of Italy for a breast cancer therapy that combines surgery to remove breast cancer with drugs to kill cancerous cells that may have spread to other parts of the body.
The foundation said Fisher and Bonadonna played major roles in developing the use of a drug combination originated by the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md.
