Joe Nemechek got through a wild race at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, N.C., and emerged with the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series championship in the closest finish in series history.
Nemechek spun twice during the Pantry 300, but steered his Chevrolet to a sixth-place finish, enough to gain a three-point championship over Bobby Labonte.
Labonte, trying to win his second consecutive title, did everything possible in the series finale, dominating to lead 234 of the race’s 300 laps and winning. However, Nemechek’s sixth-place finish was enough to clinch under the series point system.
