3rd Teen-Ager Held After Death of Star Athlete

A third teen-ager was in custody Saturday in connection with the death of a former high football star who was killed by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy he attempted to rob, police said.

Able Cason, 18, of Glendale surrendered to police Friday night and was booked on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of Shawn Cole, 17, a former Glendale High School football tailback killed Friday during the attempted robbery, said Sgt. Kevin Williams of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Cole and three accomplices, including Cason, allegedly attempted to rob L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Carr, Williams said. But Carr killed Cole because he thought the teen-ager’s realistic-looking BB gun was a semiautomatic firearm, he said.

Under California law, an accomplice in a crime can be charged with murder if a partner is killed while committing the crime.

Carr arrested the other two men, Ian B. Jerde, 19, and Andrew Wright, 18, both of Glendale, when they arrived at the scene of the shooting shortly afterward.

Cason, Jerde and Wright were being held without bail Saturday.
