CANYON COUNTRY : 2 Held in ‘Hole-in-the Wall’ String of Bank Robberies
Two Canyon Country men were being held Tuesday in connection with a string of Southern California bank robberies by a group dubbed the “Hole-in-the-Wall Gang.”
The nickname stems from the group’s habit of entering the banks they robbed through a roof or opening in a wall. The gang is suspected of robbing five Security Pacific banks in the last 14 months, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation officials.
“They always went through some sort of hole in the bank,” said FBI spokeswoman Karen Gardner.
Brent Darrin Zubek, 24, and Roderick Scott Russell, 20, were being held on suspicion of four counts of armed bank robbery. The holdups began last year with the Oct. 4 takeover of a Security Pacific bank in Northridge and was followed by the Dec. 18 heist of a Woodland Hills branch. The men also were being held in connection with a Jan. 22 robbery of a La Canada branch and a March 24 heist of a La Crescenta branch, Hoos said.
