Monrovia : Man Sentenced for Loitering
An Azusa man has been sentenced to 30 days in Los Angeles County Jail for violating Monrovia’s anti-loitering ordinance.
The 2-year-old law prohibits loitering for the purpose of selling drugs and is aimed at ridding the city’s streets of drug dealers.
Raymond Ramirez, 26, was arrested March 15, 1991, and charged with the misdemeanor. Lawyers from the county public defender’s office, who represented him, challenged the constitutionality of the law before Ramirez went to trial. After higher courts refused to hear the matter, Ramirez was convicted last week in Santa Anita Municipal Court. He was sentenced Monday.
The loitering sentence will not be served because Ramirez is serving an eight-year state prison sentence for robbery. He can still file an appeal to contest the loitering law’s legality.
