Digital Divides Into Separate Business Units: Digital Equipment Corp., criticized for moving too slowly in the fast-changing computer industry, divided itself into nine units designed to react more swiftly. The nation’s second-largest computer maker said it was splitting into five units that would target certain industry groupings, such as health care, defense, financial services, communications, and multi-vendor customer services. The company also created four other units focused on certain products and services: personal computers, peripheral components such as printers, storage systems and maintenance. Each of the nine units will be held accountable for its own profitability.
