E. Whittier Schools : Officials Will Discuss a Switch to Open Enrollment

Share

School officials are considering an enrollment policy that would allow parents to choose their children’s public school. Administrators in the East Whittier City School District are also exploring opening schools to students who live outside the district.

The proposed open-enrollment system would be a way to increase the number of students at Murphy Ranch Elementary School, which has less than 300 students and typically must combine more than one grade level into a class.

Open enrollment also could enhance district enrollment. At its peak, the district instructed about 13,000 pupils. Last year, about 7,650 students were enrolled in the district’s 10 elementary and three middle schools.

The proposed policy would address complaints by parents that they have no choice in which school their children attend, officials said.

The board will have a public meeting on the subject at 4 p.m. Feb. 2 in the district board room at 14535 E. Whittier Blvd., Whittier.
