Man Killed When Car Hits Pillar

A man was killed early Monday morning when his car hit a concrete pillar on Soledad Canyon Road and then caught fire, authorities said.

“Even the plates on the car melted,” said California Highway Patrol Officer John Manduca.

The coroner was attempting to use dental records to identify the victim, he said.

Manduca said the man was traveling west in his 1987 Toyota Celica “at a high rate of speed,” judging by the damage to the car. Shortly before 5 a.m., as the man was going under the Antelope Valley Freeway overpass, he drove into one of the freeway support pillars, Manduca said.

A woman traveling behind him saw the crash and then called police.

“When she got back the car was in flames, but he was apparently killed on impact,” Manduca said.

The coroner believes the man’s age was about 25, Manduca said.
