Revolt Brews Over EC Candidate for Top GATT Post: Major developing countries in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade are considering a challenge to the European Community’s Irish nominee as new head of the organization, diplomats said. They said the potential revolt had been sparked by resentment that the EC had appeared to want to muscle through the appointment of its former competition commissioner, Peter Sutherland--who also has U.S. backing. The world trade watchdog has called a special session on June 9 to appoint a new director-general to replace Switzerland’s Arthur Dunkel, who steps down at the end of June after 13 years in the post. Sources in the ad hoc group said over the weekend that no final decision had been taken, although several countries were keen to persist with the nomination of Uruguay’s veteran trade diplomat Julio Lacarte-Muro for the GATT post.
