With a Full Slate of Kids’ Programs, Summer Means Fun : Recreation: No lazy days ahead as arts and crafts, day camps, swimming and other activities promise a busy filled vacation.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Tennis lessons will be given this summer to every child who wants to whack a ball with a racket. At 119 locations, children 8 to 17 may receive 18 hours of tennis instruction under a program sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Foundation.

If tennis doesn’t appeal to your youngster, other summer activities abound throughout the area. Cerritos College offers a camp where junior zoologists spend five days at the Los Angeles Zoo; young writers can sharpen their skills at Cal State Long Beach; and future Hulk Hogans can get physical at Rio Hondo College’s wrestling camp.

The registration fee for tennis lessons is $10, said Arlene Barco, assistant director of the National Junior Tennis League, but no child will be turned away.

“We’re trying to encourage kids to learn a healthy physical exercise and hope they’ll get interested enough to play tennis instead of running the streets,” she said.

Call the Southern California Tennis Assn. at (310) 208-3838 for a brochure and list of locations. Classes will be held July 5 through Aug. 14.

Other day camps featuring arts and crafts, group games, swimming and trips to local amusement parks and beaches are available at most local parks departments, YMCAs and Boys/Girls Clubs.
