Clinton Rebuffed on Justice Dept. Names
Civil rights groups Tuesday refused a Clinton Administration request to recommend names to replace C. Lani Guinier as a nominee for assistant attorney general. The NAACP said it wants to hire Guinier for a top job.
Civil rights activists say they are still angry that Clinton dropped Guinier, a University of Pennsylvania law professor, as the nominee to head the Justice Department’s civil rights division.
The President said he could not ignore rising Senate objections to Guinier’s views on voting rights.
Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., executive director of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People, said he wants Guinier to be a chief NAACP advocate for civil rights.
