LOS ANGELES : Council Delays Action on Street Vendors
The Los Angeles City Council has delayed final action on a controversial measure that would legalize street vending in certain neighborhoods, voting instead to send the measure to the council’s Public Works Committee.
The measure, authored by Councilman Michael Woo, would legalize street vending for 24 months in four neighborhoods. After 18 months, the council would decide whether to implement the law citywide.
About 500 street vendors, mostly Latino immigrants, attended the meeting to support the measure. Facing strong opposition from Councilman Nate Holden and others, Woo agreed to send the proposed ordinance to the Public Works Committee. It may consider the proposal next week.
