Share

About a dozen local ham operators will be participating in an international competition beginning Saturday designed to sharpen their radio skills in the event of a communications breakdown caused by an earthquake, flood or other emergency.

Members of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service throughout the United States and Canada will try to contact as many ham operators as possible during the 24-hour event, which starts at 11 a.m. Saturday and ends at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Cypress Civic Center, 5275 Orange Ave., will serve as communications center for local radio operators.

The public is invited to observe the operation and ask questions but will not be able to talk on the radios. The event is free.
