Boston Police Leader Quits; Eyes Mayor’s Post
The city’s police commissioner resigned Thursday and has said he may enter the crowded race to replace Mayor Raymond L. Flynn.
Francis M. Roache has headed the Police Department since 1985. His resignation, effective June 30, came one day after a U.S. Senate subcommittee held a brief confirmation hearing on Flynn’s nomination to be U.S. ambassador to the Vatican.
Flynn, mayor since 1984, said he will resign the day his appointment is confirmed. At least eight candidates are vying to succeed him.
