Oxnard : Council Backs New Community Center
The Oxnard City Council voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of a Housing Department plan to build a community center in Pleasant Valley Village in south Oxnard.
Residents of public housing in the neighborhood originally requested a community center in the mid-1980s, said Ruben Andrade,CQ Oxnard housing maintenance superintendent. In the interim, he said, the residents have been forced to improvise.
“They’ve moved around a lot, looking for a place to get together,” he said. “It’s always been real cramped.”
The 2,500-square-foot community center will cost $207,952 and be built with federal money.
The grant was approved after an official from U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development visited the community in 1990, Andrade said.
Tuesday’s council vote allows the Housing Department to seek bids from contractors.
Andrade said he hopes that construction will begin in September.
