Bell, Huntington Park Offer Free Lunches to Poor Children
Hundreds of free lunches will be served to children in Bell and Huntington Park this summer as part of a federally funded pilot program for low-income families.
The Summer Food Service Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is coordinated by the cities’ parks and recreation departments and the office of Assemblywoman Martha M. Escutia (D-Huntington Park).
Meals are available to children 18 and younger from noon to 1:30 p.m. each weekday through August. Meals must be eaten on site. No identification is necessary.
At least half of the students in Huntington Park and Bell receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, said Dolores Sanchez, an aide to Escutia.
The six-week pilot program, which began last week, is administered by East Los Angeles College. If the two cities submit proposals to the Department of Agriculture to administer the program, it could become year-round beginning in October.
The meals are served in Huntington Park at Salt Lake Park, 3401 E. Florence Ave., and in Bell at Little Bear Park, 6707 Bear Ave., and Veterans Park, 6526 Wilcox Ave.
