Baby Stolen as Mother Turns Back
Police and FBI agents were searching Friday for a woman who walked off with a 6-week-old baby when the child’s mother turned her back for a few seconds.
Local media broadcast a plea from the family of the kidnaped baby describing their agony and urging the woman to return the child.
The incident happened Thursday when Maria Alvarez took her daughter, Crystal, to a neighborhood health clinic on the city’s North Side. While waiting in line a Hispanic woman told her she had a beautiful child and asked if she could hold her.
Witnesses said that the woman had asked the same thing of at least two other women in line, but that they had refused.
Just as Alvarez handed her baby to the woman her name was called and she turned to a counter a few steps away. The woman then fled with the child.
