A man who barricaded himself inside his garage with an arsenal of weapons after allegedly shooting at his wife was in custody Monday after surrendering to deputies, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

John Delgado, 44, was booked on suspicion of spousal abuse and assault with a deadly weapon and was held on $500,000 bail, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Angie McLaughlin.

Delgado’s wife, who was not wounded, had called deputies to the couple’s home on Lefloss Avenue after the pair argued about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, McLaughlin said.

“(The man) had been drinking,” McLaughlin said. “Delgado struck her, then fired one round at her from a handgun, missing her.” Delgado then ran to the garage and barricaded himself inside, “stating he was going to kill himself,” McLaughlin said.

In the garage was an assortment of 19 weapons, including handguns, shotguns, rifles and a large amount of ammunition, McLaughlin said.

Deputies evacuated several nearby homes and called for a sheriff’s special weapons team about 11 p.m., but before the team’s members arrived, Delgado surrendered, McLaughlin said.

The woman, whose name was not released, suffered only superficial injuries when her husband hit her and did not require medical treatment, McLaughlin said.
