Kennedy McKinney Suffers First Defeat

Challenger Vuyani Bungu of South Africa handed International Boxing Federation junior-featherweight champion Kennedy McKinney of Memphis, Tenn., his first loss in 29 fights to win the title Saturday at Pretoria, South Africa.

American judges John Stewart and Adalaide Triplett scored it 116-112 for Bungu; Roberto Ramirez of Puerto Rico gave Bungu (24-2) a 117-111 advantage.

Hockey

The Kings have offered free-agent center Scott Thornton of the Edmonton Oilers a three-year contract worth $400,000 per year.

The Oilers have until Thursday to decide whether to match it or accept a future draft pick as compensation. Compensation would be the Kings’ second-round draft pick in 1995.

Thornton had four goals and 11 points in 61 games last season.

Basketball

Free-agent center Chris Dudley turned down a $24-million, six-year offer from the Sacramento Kings because he wants to re-sign with the Portland Trail Blazers, who have offered him a multiyear deal worth $3 million per season.

The Orlando Magic has filed a grievance with the NBA, protesting the league’s rejection of the team’s $22-million, six-year contract with Horace Grant. . . . Forward A.C. Green and the Phoenix Suns are suing the NBA for voiding Green’s new $26-million, five-year deal.

Auto Racing

Bobby Labonte won the rain-delayed Detroit Gasket 200 stock car race at Brooklyn, Mich. Labonte, the younger brother of former Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte, averaged 142.461 m.p.h.

Emerson Fittipaldi, continuing the domination of the Penske team, won the pole position for today’s Slick 50 200 Indy car race in a track lap record 175.091 m.p.h. at the New Hampshire International Raceway in Loudon, N.H.

Jurisprudence

Michael Cooper, a former Laker star and current assistant coach, and his wife, Wanda, have been sued for more than $11,000 in back rent on their New Mexico home.

Calico Corp. Limited of the Bahamas alleged in its lawsuit that the Coopers have fallen behind in payments on their real estate contract and asked for immediate possession of the property, $11,407 in back rent and unspecified damages.

A federal judge has thrown out former University of Miami quarterback Bryan Fortay’s $10-million lawsuit against the school for negligence and breach of contract.

Fortay claimed that Coach Dennis Erickson breached an oral contract by breaking a promise to make him the starting quarterback for the 1991 and 1992 seasons. Fortay transferred to Rutgers, where he played as quarterback until graduating last year.

Tennis

Third-seeded Boris Becker staged an impressive second-set comeback to upset top-seeded Michael Stich, 6-2, 7-5, in an all-German semifinal at the Volvo International at New Haven, Conn. Becker will play seventh-seeded Marc Rosset, who beat sixth-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, in today’s final.

Wayne Ferreira, the only seeded player to survive a week of upsets, beat Alex Corretja, 6-1, 6-2, after a rain delay of more than seven hours in the semifinals of the RCA Championships at Indianapolis. He will play Olivier Delaitre of France, who beat Bernd Karbacher of Germany, 7-5, 6-4, in today’s final.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf defeated fourth-seeded Mary Pierce, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the finals of the $1-million Matinee International women’s tournament at Montreal. Graf will face second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the title match. Sanchez Vicario advanced by defeating third-seeded Kimiko Date of Japan, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Baseball

Thirty two players received two-day suspensions from the Northwest League because of a bench-clearing brawl between the Boise Hawks and Yakima Bears on Thursday night. The suspensions will be rotated so that no more than three players sit out any one game.

Kevin Howard’s two three-run home runs led Thousand Oaks to a 20-3 victory over Hamilton, Ohio, in the championship game of the Little League Junior World Series in Taylor, Mich.

Miscellany

Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans won the 1,500 freestyle in 16 minutes 24.24 seconds at the U.S. National Championships in Indianapolis to qualify for the World Championships in Rome.

Bruno Risi of Switzerland won the men’s individual title at the World Track Cycling Championships at Palermo, Italy, with 35 points.

The United States under-20 national soccer team lost, 3-1, to El Salvador at Puerto Cortes, Honduras, in a regional qualifying match for next year’s FIFA World Youth Championship in Nigeria.
