UC Irvine English Professor Gets $106,000 Humanities Grant

UC Irvine English Prof. John Carlos Rowe has been awarded a $106,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to organize a five-week summer institute next year for high school, college and university teachers. The institute will focus on multicultural issues in American literature.

“A $106,000 grant for the humanities is an eyebrow-raiser these days,” UCI spokesman Scott Nelson said. “Humanities funding is hard to come by.”

Rowe, 48, director of the UCI Critical Theory Institute, will recruit 40 educators from Southern California to take part in the 1995 summer institute. Guest lecturers will discuss how to incorporate multicultural issues in the teaching of American literature.
