The union that represents non-teaching employees of the Ventura County Community College District has voted to endorse a former administrator in the November election.

Members of the Service Employees International Union, Local No. 535, which represents about 350 college district secretaries, technicians and other workers, have endorsed John Tallman in his campaign for the Area 1 seat on the governing board.

Cheryl Herrmann, the Ventura College lab technician who serves as union vice president on the campus, said Tallman has a reputation for supporting classified employees within the three-campus college district.

“He’s in favor of an employee’s right to decide for an agency shop, he’s against the privatization of public education and he supports fiscal accountability,” Herrmann said Tuesday.

Tallman is a former college district administrator who retired last year after more than 20 years of service.

He is challenging appointed incumbent Karen Boone and Ventura businessman Jim Hibbs on the Nov. 8 ballot for the Area 1 seat on the board.
