CALABASAS : Lecture to Highlight Uses of Native Plants
While chewing on a Rolaids tablet is a common way to relieve heartburn, munching on woolly blue curl, a plant found in the Santa Monica Mountains, may be a better and more natural way to ease digestive problems.
This and other tips will be discussed during an overview of the medical and cosmetic use of native plants.
The lecture is the first in a free series of discussions planned at the Soka University of America Botanical Research Center and Nursery in Calabasas.
Melanie Baer-Keeley, a native-plant horticultural specialist, will lead the series with an overview of past and present uses of native plants.
Other discussions will include how applications of sugar bushes and the yerba mansa plant can help remedy colds.
Keeley will also explain how other herbs can be used to supplement protein deficiency, relieve arthritis pain and smooth the skin.
The first lecture is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 12. Reservations are required. Call (818) 878-3763.
