NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : $100 Million Given to Improve Schools
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
New York will receive $100 million--half of it from the Annenberg Foundation--to replace some of its big, overcrowded schools with 50 smaller ones emphasizing individual attention and parental involvement. The new schools will serve about 50,000 of the city’s 1.2 million pupils. The Annenberg gift is the first grant to a public school system from philanthropist Walter H. Annenberg, who pledged $500 million to improve public education last December. The $50 million is to be matched by other donors.
