COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Pepperdine Holds Off the Anteaters for Water Polo Victory

Pepperdine goalie Vatche Shirikjian blocked Peter Muller’s shot with three seconds left as sixth-ranked Pepperdine held on to defeat UC Irvine, 11-10, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo game Saturday at Malibu.

The Anteaters (5-11, 1-6) led Pepperdine, 9-8, entering the fourth quarter, but the Waves’ Jack Kocur scored two goals, including the winner with 19 seconds left.

Kocur’s goal early in the quarter tied the score, 9-9. Twenty-four seconds later, Irvine’s Omar Amr scored, but Pepperdine’s Alan Herrmann tied it, 10-10, with 3 minutes 23 seconds left.

Peter Muller led the Anteaters with three goals. Ryan Bailey, Ofer Horn and Matt Maunz added two goals each.

Herrmann led Pepperdine (10-4, 5-1) with four goals.

In Golden State Athletic conference men’s soccer:

Azusa Pacific 4, Southern California College 2--Sam Nocura and Hector Perez each scored for Southern California College (5-8-1, 1-5). Matt Johnston scored three goals for Azusa Pacific (11-4-2, 5-2).

Biola 4, Concordia 1--Joel Dietrich scored Concordia’s only goal. Concordia dropped to 4-10-1 (0-6 in conference).

Ziggy Trevor scored once for Biola (4-2 in conference).

In Big West women’s volleyball:

Nevada 3, UC Irvine 0--Tiffany Nuemeier had 20 kills to lead Nevada (8-14, 4-9). Kelly Martin also had 16 kills and Monica Petrilli had 46 assists.

Popi Edwards had 25 kills for UC Irvine (5-15, 4-9).

In Golden State Athletic Conference volleyball:

Azusa Pacific 3, Concordia 0--Stephanie Benitez had nine kills to lead Azusa Pacific, 15-8, 15-6, 16-14. Azusa Pacific improved to 18-7, 9-2 in conference.

Jennifer Guzman had 12 kills for Concordia (12-13, 2-9).

Fresno Pacific 3, Southern California College 2--Genevieve Wright had 22 kills and Celeste Young added 19 for host SCC (16-8, 5-6), which lost, 5-15, 7-15, 15-13, 15-8, 15-6.

Tracy Ainger had 20 kills and Alyson Wilson added 14 for Fresno Pacific (18-7, 8-3), ranked 12th in NAIA Division I.

It was the second time in as many nights that SCC lost a match after winning the first two games.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 3, Chapman 1--Shawna Parkinson had 19 kills for visiting Chapman (20-7), which lost, 15-10, 15-11, 13-15, 15-5. Jennifer Clark had 20 kills for Dominguez Hills (5-26).

Christi Park had 37 assists for Chapman.

At the Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Cross-Country Classic:

Long Beach State’s Bendzick fifth--Pat Bendzick finished in 25:32.8 in the men’s race for Long Beach. His teammate, Dennis Swaningson, was sixth in 25:41. UC Irvine’s Todd Couleton was eighth in 25:45, and Southern California College’s Jason Schaefer was ninth in 25:52.

In the women’s race, Sonya Berro of Long Beach State was 11th in 18:51, and Tiffany York of Irvine was 13th in 18:54.
