If Ever a Wiz There Was, Mr. Wizard Is One Because . . .

Congratulations to Frank Manning for his very inspiring March 18 article describing how Don Herbert, alias “Mr. Wizard,” motivates students and teachers.

Mr. Wizard’s method of teaching, which always involves hands-on activities with children, has influenced untold numbers of teachers and students to enter the disciplines of math and science. He helps children understand the mysteries of science and reinforces a proven methodology for teachers. Bill Aldridge, retired executive director of the National Science Teachers Assn., said, “Don Herbert has motivated more children to pursue science careers than probably any other single person in the country.”

George Tressel, director of the National Science Foundation, said, “When I talk with science teachers, doctors, engineers and that large number who are not scientists, they all say Mr. Wizard taught them to think. He has helped millions to understand what science is all about.”

Since Sputnik in 1959 focused the nation’s attention on the need for science and math education, the public and private sectors have invested several hundred million research dollars to improve teaching methodology in science and stimulate student interest in science education in our public and private schools. With this enormous outlay of funds, no substitute had been found for a dedicated and highly skilled teacher. America is fortunate to have had the rare talent of Don Herbert to provide a how-to for science teachers and motivation for students.

We hope he will continue his activities for years to come--for the sake of our teachers and children.
