The United States on Wednesday ordered two Cuban diplomats to leave the country, claiming they assaulted police officers during a riot in August in front of Cuba’s U.N. mission.

Edmundo Suarez Hernandez, a counselor at the mission, and Saul Hermida Griego, an attache, were ordered to leave by midnight Sunday, said James Rubin, spokesman for the U.S. mission. Their families also were ordered to leave.

The riot took place when protesters opposed to the government of President Fidel Castro chained themselves to the gate of the mission. Several New York police officers were hurt in the scuffle that followed.
