Four-Star Films : ‘Hotel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie’

Share

In his fascinating 4-hour-plus investigation of the sadistic Gestapo chief known as “the Butcher of Lyon,” documentarian Marcel Ophuls puts on display a real-life detective story. And in it he casts himself as a modern-day Philip Marlowe. To confront the monstrous deeds of Barbie (center, near the pillar) is finally to contemplate human nature in all its contradictions. As in his “The Sorrow and the Pity,” Ophuls calls France to account for its sins during the Nazi Occupation and also lays bare the subsequent sorry roles played by the United States, Peru and Bolivia in the decades-long delay in bringing Barbie to justice. To watch “Hotel Terminus,” an Oscar winner, is like seeing a great novel come alive on the screen. (KCET Saturday at 9 p.m.)
