Athena Award Given to ‘Career Volunteer’

Who: Janet Harris Tonkovich

Contribution: Tonkovich, an Irvine resident, recently received the Athena Award for outstanding volunteer service. At a recent Newport Harbor Panhellenic luncheon, she was characterized as a “career volunteer” who was instrumental in efforts to incorporate Irvine, which became a city in 1971. She is a former school PTA president and served on the Irvine Unified School District Middle School Task Force. She is also a former president of the Irvine High School Athletic Booster Club and winner of the 1987 Golden Touch Award presented by the school. Tonkovich also does volunteer work with the Greek systems at USC and UC Irvine. *

3 Are Honored for Assisting Disabled

Who: Rainbow Transfer Recycling Inc. of Huntington Beach, GT Bicycles Inc. of Santa Ana and the Orange County Fire Authority, based in Orange.

Contribution: The three received the Spirit of Goodwill Award, which highlights companies that give people with disabilities an opportunity to be productive and self-sufficient. Last year, Goodwill in Orange County provided job training and placement services for 905 people with disabilities.

Drivers Needed at Day-Care Center

Volunteer drivers are needed at the Irvine Adult Day Health Services Center. Drivers transport elderly day-care participants who arrive at the center by 9 a.m. and leave for their homes at 3:30 p.m. To volunteer, a person must be at least 18 and have a valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance. Meals Group Needs People With Wheels

Senior Meals and Services in Seal Beach needs volunteers to deliver meals to frail, homebound seniors in the city.

Home meals are delivered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, to more than 70 seniors in Seal Beach.

Bowers Museum Looking for Docents

The Bowers Museum Docent Guild has scheduled an informational coffee for prospective docents beginning at 1 p.m. May 6 at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art, 20th and Main streets.

Museum docents give guided tours and conduct community outreach programs. Docent training classes begin in September for both weekday and weekend docents.
