Costa Mesa Appoints 7 Members to Board That Will Promote Tourism

Share

The City Council this week appointed a seven-member board to promote tourism in Costa Mesa.

The Business Improvement District Advisory Board, which will be funded by the city’s bed tax on hotels and motels, will be headed by Wayne Bodington, general manager of the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel. Other members include several more representatives of the hotel industry, a council member and a representative of the city manager’s office.

To finance the tourism marketing campaign, the council recently increased the bed tax by one percentage point, to 7%, but has yet to decide if hotels and motels within the city will be required to pay the increase or whether it will be paid on a voluntary basis. The council will vote on the issue in two weeks.

Ed Fawcett, executive director of the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce, said all those involved with the tourism project are pleased.

“We have been working toward this for a long time,” he said.
