Allowing an anonymous sniper to take cheap potshots at a person should be beneath the dignity of this newspaper and its staff.

Yet that is precisely what Lawrence Christon did when he allowed “a leading film critic and historian who asked not to be identified” to denigrate Jack Palance (“Home on the Range,” April 30).

Christon, “the critic” and The Times should be ashamed.
