NEWPORT BEACH : History, Wildlife Focus of Campfire Programs
The summer season of campfire programs at Shellmaker Island begins Saturday with a program on prehistory of the Upper Newport Bay and Orange County.
Offered by the state Fish and Game Department, the Upper Newport Bay Assn. and the Orange County Harbors, Beaches and Parks Department, each talk will feature a wildlife, history or conservation expert.
Saturday’s speaker will be Michael E. Macko, president of Macko Archeological Consulting, who will discuss the archeology of the bay region and his dig at the Newporter North housing tract site.
Audubon Society field study instructor Sylvia Gallagher will lead the June 24 program, titled “Back Bay Breeders.” It will focus on birds that nest in the area.
The July 15 program will be “Fish Watching at Upper Newport Bay,” with marine biologist Paul Gregory of the Fish and Game Department. He will also discuss changes in the local marine environment during the past 30 years.
Campfire events begin with skits at 7:30 p.m. Speakers talk for 30 to 45 minutes, starting at 8 p.m., and answer questions after the program.
