NEWPORT BEACH / COSTA MESA : Adams School Parents Want New Boundary

Share

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District tonight will consider a plan to redraw the boundaries that determine which children attend Adams Elementary School.

The issue was brought to the school board’s attention by neighborhood parents, who said they want to put an end to the practice of busing children to the school from other parts of town.

Many parents would like to see the attendance boundaries redrawn so the school on Clubhouse Road serves only children in the Mesa Verde neighborhood.

The boundary changes would create a school with a majority white population out of one that is now 51% Latino.

The district began busing children to Adams Elementary because it was less populated than other elementary schools in Costa Mesa. A few parents have said they are concerned the school is now overcrowded and that the quality of education at Adams has been affected.

The board will continue its discussion on the redistricting topic at tonight’s meeting.

“The discussion is ongoing,” Supt. Mac Bernd said. “There is a chance a decision will be reached, but we don’t know if we will get that far.”
