SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The multimedia company that brought Bob Dylan’s vast catalogue to CD-ROM is now turning its sights to the less-cerebral library of “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” the longtime television ratings champ that specializes in unplanned pratfalls and sight gags.

Graphix Zone Inc. will have access to more than 400,000 video clips of assorted mayhem collected by the makers of the popular ABC series, including the 7,000 that have actually been aired on the 6-year-old show.

Terms of the deal with Capital Cities/ABC Multimedia Group, which distributes the show to 80 countries, were not released. Graphix Zone officials said the CD-ROM, which will be priced from $39.95 to $49.95, is to be shipped to stores in time for the holiday shopping season.

Graphix Zone President Chuck Cortright said his company plans a series of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” CD-ROM releases, each with about 400 clips from the show. Some of the issues may focus on themed clips, such as outtakes from weddings or clips of animals.

Besides viewing the snippets of video, users will be able to manipulate them, Cortright said. For example, users will be able to string the video images together and then choose from comical voice-overs--or even record their own narration--to create their own “show.” The clips average 12 seconds in length.

The television show’s makers said the marriage with multimedia is a natural fit for their collection of outtakes. “I’ve always known that our videos would translate well into the CD-ROM arena,” Executive Producer Vin Di Bona said. “After all, a belly laugh is a belly laugh.”

Graphix Zone, founded in 1989, earned critical raves earlier this year for “Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Interactive,” a high-tech stroll through the career, music and lyrics of the folk singer.

“Highway 61 Interactive” has sold more than 50,000 copies. The company has also sold more than 70,000 copies of a similar package featuring the music artist formerly known as Prince.
