Wilson’s Housekeeper

Re “Wilson Hiring of Illegal Immigrant Is Reported,” May 4:

Why is the fact that Gov. Pete Wilson employed and failed to pay Social Security taxes for an undocumented immigrant such a major news story? This is simply another example of the Republican doctrine of do as I say for political expediency, not as I do in reality!

* I compliment you on your May 5 editorial regarding the politicizing of the illegal immigration issue. I couldn’t agree with you more that most illegal immigrants come here to work, and in most cases, take the jobs that no one else wants.

Having been recently in Mexico, in an area where the average daily wage is $3, I can understand why Mexican citizens are here looking for any kind of work. I believe a solution to the problem would be to have no minimum wage for immigrants. This would allow the free enterprise system to set the amounts they are paid, in that each person would negotiate the rate at which he or she is willing to work. This would result in very low-cost labor and great benefits for Americans that are doing the hiring.

As to Wilson’s problem with his failure to pay Social Security taxes on a housekeeper he had working 17 years ago, if that’s the worst thing he’s ever done, he’s got my vote.

* Wilson is truly a man of his word. He campaigns to deny government benefits to illegal immigrants, and that is exactly what he did when he failed to pay Social Security taxes for the illegal immigrant he hired. But he shouldn’t let his former wife take the credit, he should claim it himself.
