The Clippers, who will pick second behind the Golden State Warriors in next Wednesday’s NBA draft, have completed interview-workouts with the players they’re considering selecting.

After interviewing Maryland forward Joe Smith, Michigan State guard Shawn Respert, Oklahoma State center Bryant (Big Country) Reeves and Arizona guard Damon Stoudamire last week, the Clippers interviewed North Carolina forwards Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace on Monday and Alabama forward Antonio McDyess on Tuesday.

Clipper center Stanley Roberts, who has missed the last two seasons because of Achilles’ tendon injuries, worked out against Smith, Stackhouse, Wallace and McDyess.

Coach Bill Fitch said the decision will be difficult.

“We’re the first [team] to finish with it and I think that if you look at the four that everybody is calling the big four [Smith, Stackhouse, Wallace and McDyess], we had a very good visit from all four of those kids, plus we had a good visit from Big Country,” Fitch said.

“Big Country was very impressive as well. There wasn’t a lot of country to him. He was very hip about the NBA. He wore the basket out.”

Fitch wouldn’t say which way the Clippers are leaning, but if the Warriors take Smith, as expected, Stackhouse might be the best choice because he can play shooting guard, perhaps the Clippers’ weakest position last season.

Although there were published reports that Stackhouse sent the Clippers a letter saying he didn’t want to come here for a workout and didn’t want them to draft him, North Carolina Coach Dean Smith said it never happened.

“I don’t know how that rumor got started,” Smith said.

Said Fitch: “I think it was an intentional plant [by] people who would like to see him stay on the East Coast. . . . There was never any doubt that he was going to come here and visit and work out. And there was never any doubt that if he’s drafted by us he’d play here.”
