A manufacturer of medical safety devices has leased a large industrial building in Ventura for the production of instruments that reduce accidental needle injuries and other mishaps in the health care industry.

MDC Research Ltd., whose parent holds various U.S. and international patents on needle safety devices, has taken a multiyear lease on a state-of-the-art, 26,000-square-foot facility on Bunsen Avenue.

The plant will become a pilot manufacturing center, housing the firm’s research and development operations, automated production systems and executive offices, company officials said.

MDC is a subsidiary of Med-Design Corp., a publicly held concern based in Philadelphia.

An official of the parent company, indicating a large market for items to be produced at the new plant, said about 800,000 U.S. health-care workers and patients are accidentally stuck by injection needles each year.

Details of MDC’s lease were not disclosed, but officials said the firm has a purchase option on the property.
