Bill Easing LAUSD Breakup OKd
The state Assembly approved minor changes Monday in a bill that smoothes the way for the potential breakup of the Los Angeles Unified School District, sending the measure to Gov. Pete Wilson for his expected signature.
Both houses of the Legislature had approved the bill (AB 107) by Assemblywoman Paula Boland (R-Granada Hills) in recent days, and it remained only for the Assembly to agree to technical amendments before the measure received final legislative passage.
The bill reduces the number of voters needed to place the breakup proposal on the ballot. Instead of 25% of the district’s voters, only 8% of those who voted in the election for governor are needed to sign petitions.
Boland has said that although the bill will become effective Jan. 1, it will be 18 months to two years before voters finally decide whether to break up the district into smaller units.
