Serbian gunners shelled Sarajevo on Tuesday, killing six people and wounding 38 in the worst bombardment of the Bosnian capital in two weeks, U.N. and Health Ministry sources said.

Among the wounded were two children and six Egyptian peacekeepers, whose observation post was directly targeted by Serbian mortar fire.

The U.N. rapid-reaction force retaliated Tuesday evening, firing six shells from its 155-millimeter guns at the Bosnian Serb position.

It was the first time the guns had been fired since they arrived in position on Mt. Igman, west of Sarajevo, over the weekend. The U.N. troops said they did not know what effect the firing had except that the Serbian mortar fire stopped.
