A man suspected of robbing an eatery and raping the store’s lone employee was taken into custody Wednesday night by officers who saw him flee the store after allegedly emptying the cash register.

Police said Donald Leroy Shafer, 25, of Fullerton was being held Thursday on $50,000 bail at the Orange County Jail. He was expected to be arraigned today, Fullerton Sgt. Glenn Deveney said.

The incident began shortly before 8 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a possible robbery at an eatery in the 2600 block of West Orangethorpe Avenue. Officers surrounded the building and moments later saw Shafer step out of a rear room and then take money from a cash drawer.

The 40-year-old female employee also came out of the rear room and fled out the front door past the suspect, police said. According to police, Shafer followed her out the door and ran west into the arms of waiting officers.

Shafer was unarmed and did not resist, Deveney said.

The employee was treated at a hospital and released.
