UNLV Honors Former Stars Augmon, Johnson
With family, friends and their former coach in attendance, two players who helped the University of Nevada Las Vegas reach the pinnacle of college basketball success returned to the Thomas and Mack Center Monday night to have their jerseys retired.
Stacey Augmon of the Atlanta Hawks and Larry Johnson of the Charlotte Hornets were honored for their All-American basketball careers at UNLV. They helped the Runnin’ Rebels to an NCAA championship in 1990 and Final Four appearance in 1991.
After the ceremony, UNLV lost to Charleston Southern, 63-55.
Among those in attendance was former UNLV Coach Jerry Tarkanian, who left the school amid controversy in 1992 after 19 seasons. Tarkanian is now coach at Fresno State.
