Apple Confirms It Will Shut eWorld Online Service: The move by the struggling computer maker had long been anticipated in the industry. The service--providing news, educational and entertainment information and Internet access--was started two years ago to compete with such established vendors as America Online, CompuServe and Prodigy. But it won only 147,000 subscribers while those competitors boast millions. Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple told subscribers that service will end on March 31, spokeswoman Susan Marino said.
