Bilingual Reform
Re “L.A. Schools’ Bilingual Reform Plan Criticized,” May 17:
So, the Los Angeles Unified School District is proposing a revision of its bilingual program. Get real. Bilingual education doesn’t work, but evidently those who profit from the bilingual funding structure don’t want to relinquish their power base.
Sadly, the children they purport to help are suffering the most. Common sense dictates bilingual funds be used to give new students a semester (or two) of just intensive English language lessons. ESL. No other classes.
Yes, our newcomers then would be a semester behind their age group in school, but that is preferable to producing young adults who cannot compete in an English-speaking culture.
