Lawyers for Klaas’ Killer Finish Presenting Evidence
Lawyers fighting for the life of Richard Allen Davis finished presenting evidence in his death penalty trial Wednesday, bringing the fate of the man who killed Polly Klaas a step closer to the jury.
Closing arguments are tentatively scheduled for Friday. The case then could go to the jury.
Davis, 42, was convicted June 18 of killing Polly after kidnapping her from a slumber party in her Petaluma bedroom Oct. 1, 1993. He faces two possible punishments--execution or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Defense attorneys are arguing for prison, saying Davis’ lifetime of abandonment, abuse and alcoholism made him what he is.
Prosecutors say the death of 12-year-old Polly, coupled with Davis’ long life of crime before that, demands the state’s harshest punishment.
