Firefighters fought for more than six hours Wednesday to control two brush fires that charred about 1,040 acres on base.

The first fire occurred about 11:50 a.m. at the north end of Camp Pendleton and burned 1,000 acres, Lt. Tiley Nunnink said. Before the first blaze could be controlled, another brush fire broke out about 1:20 p.m. in the central part of the base, authorities said. The second fire singed about 40 acres.

About 35 firefighters from Camp Pendleton, the Orange County Fire Authority and other agencies battled the blazes into the evening, Nunnink said. The cause of both fires is under investigation.
