INUIT WOMEN ARTISTS edited by Odette Leroux, Marion E. Jackson & Minnie Aodla Freeman (Chronicle Books: $27.50, 253 pp., paperback original). The drawings, prints and carvings in this handsome volume were done by women working in Cape Dorset, on the western edge of Baffin Island. Over the decades, these women have seen their ancestral way of life transformed by Western technology. Their work reflects an older system of beliefs: Owls appear amid blooming flowers; women wearing facial tattoos tend their families in a warm, humane vision of life in the harsh Arctic environment.
