The Dallas Cowboys got a scare Saturday night when Emmitt Smith, playing for the first time in the exhibition season, injured his left knee when 340-pound teammate Erik Williams fell on it in the second quarter of a 20-3 loss to the Denver Broncos at Irving, Texas.

Smith stayed down for almost five minutes before he walked unassisted to the sidelines. X-rays later showed no problems, but he was scheduled for an MRI today to make sure.

John Elway and Bill Musgrave each threw touchdown passes for the Broncos. Musgrave’s went for 15 yards to Mike Sherrard.
