Summiteers OK Plan for Secure Europe
Leaders from 54 nations meeting in Lisbon agreed on a new vision of European security that will embrace both East and West in the 21st century and accommodate NATO expansion into Central and Eastern Europe. Despite Russian objections to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s plan to absorb new members, including some of Moscow’s former Warsaw Pact allies, the security model that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe approved by consensus affirms the right of every country to develop its own security alliances.
