Science Center to Offer Robot-Building Class

The Launch Pad, a nonprofit educational center at South Coast Plaza, is offering an workshop on robot-building for parents and children from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

With the help of instructors, parents and children will learn to build a Hyper Peppy toy robot.

The gadget is about 5 inches tall and 10 inches wide and responds to touch and sound, said Melissa V. Centeno, a spokeswoman for the Launch Pad.

“If you were to clap, it would turn into the direction of the clapping,” she said. “It’s a little robot on three wheels.”

The cost of the toy is $30, including batteries. Workshop fees are $6 for members and $8 for nonmembers.

The Launch Pad is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating children, assisting teachers and increasing public understanding and appreciation of science, math and technology.

The center offers about 60 exhibits and live science shows.
