AOL Weighs Charging Additional Fees

Times Staff and Wire Reports

America Online Inc. said it’s considering charging extra fees for certain exclusive services such as games, as the No. 1 online service looks to bolster revenue. The company also is weighing selling packages of popular information to non-AOL subscribers, an analyst said. AOL this month introduced a $19.95 flat fee for unlimited monthly usage to compete with rivals including Microsoft Corp.’s online service and AT&T; Corp.’s Internet-access service. As a result, AOL must rely more on other revenue sources, such as advertising and electronic transactions, and perhaps charging separate prices for popular information. AOL declined to comment on any fees it’s considering charging. Dulles, Va.-based AOL’s shares fell 50 cents to $36.375 on the NYSE.
